Betting Strategies

We Bet Better

Sports betting rewards patience and process. Here's how we approach it.

Straight Picks

This is the foundation. One game, one side. No complications.

At WBB Sports, we focus on moneylines, spreads, and totals. We generally stay away from lines worse than -160. The math doesn't favor you when you need to risk $160 to win $100.

If you're newer to betting, start here. Master the basics before getting fancy.

Bankroll Management

Your bankroll is the money you've set aside specifically for betting. Not rent. Not groceries. Money you can lose without it affecting your life.

We use units. One unit equals 1-2% of your total bankroll. If your bankroll is $1,000, one unit is $10-20.

Why units? They keep you honest. They prevent chasing losses. They let you survive the inevitable cold streaks.

A few principles:

Parlays

We don't recommend parlays for serious bankroll growth. The house edge compounds with every leg you add.

That said, we understand the appeal. Small bet, big potential payout. It's fun.

If you're going to parlay:

Line Shopping

Different sportsbooks offer different odds on the same game. The difference between -110 and -105 doesn't feel significant on a single bet. Over hundreds of bets, it's the difference between winning and losing money.

Have accounts at multiple books. Check odds before placing any bet.

Oddschecker lets you compare lines across sportsbooks in real time.

"Team X is 8-2 against the spread in their last 10" sounds compelling. It usually isn't.

What matters more: injuries, rest days, travel, weather, coaching adjustments, and matchup-specific factors. A trend from games played six months ago with different rosters tells you almost nothing about tonight.

We dig into the context. You should too.

Advanced: Key Numbers

In football, final margins cluster around specific numbers: 3, 7, 10, and 14. Field goals are worth 3. Touchdowns plus extra point are worth 7. The math shapes the outcomes.

When you see a spread at -2.5 versus -3.5, that one point matters enormously. Getting the right side of a key number is often the difference between a push, a win, and a bad beat.

Key numbers exist in other sports too, though less pronounced. NBA games cluster around 7-point margins. MLB totals land on 7 and 9 more often than you'd expect.

For a full breakdown by sport, Covers' key numbers guide covers it well.

Advanced: Teasers

Teasers let you move spreads in your favor across multiple games, at reduced payouts. In football, they can be valuable when used correctly.

The key is crossing key numbers. A 6-point teaser on a -7.5 favorite moves it to -1.5, crossing both 7 and 3. That's valuable. A teaser that doesn't cross key numbers is usually just giving the house more edge.

The "Wong teaser" strategy targets specific ranges:

We use teasers sparingly and only when the numbers align. For a deeper look, Covers' NFL teaser strategy guide breaks down the approach.
